Themes and the Theme Editor

  • 20 built-in themes, including Neon Tokyo, Green Rain, Blade Runner, Synth Pulse, Tron Grid, Outrun Sunset, Arasaka and Cyber Sakura
  • Every theme sets all 16 ANSI colors plus the window chrome, glow, CRT scanlines, prompt colors and font
  • The Theme Editor has a color well for every field and a live preview. Built-in themes are protected: your edits are saved as an override, and Restore Default undoes them
  • Import, export or make a new theme from the current one. Themes are .cybatheme files that reload live when you save them

Neon Glow and rendering

  • Neon Glow, built on Apple’s Metal, makes every character glow. Switch between Neon Glow and Clean with the GPU Glow button, Text › Toggle Neon Glow (⌃⌘G) or Settings › Rendering
  • Pick the Metal or Classic renderer and the Fast or Classic parser, all switchable live
  • Stays smooth when output floods in, with typing and scrolling at full speed

A terminal plus a widget drawer

  • One terminal running your normal login zsh with your own dotfiles, which CybaTerm never edits
  • Beside it, a widget drawer of up to 5 panes. Add Pane adds a slot, Pin keeps one fixed, and Shuffle rotates the unpinned slots every 30 seconds
  • Hack Mode (⌃⌘H) turns every slot into a fake hacker feed, then puts your layout back
  • Command palette (⇧⌘K) for widgets, themes and more

Shell integration

  • ⌘↑ and ⌘↓ jump between prompts, and ⇧⌘C copies the last command’s output
  • A notification when a long command finishes
  • The cyba command switches prompts, themes and widgets from the shell
  • Session logging to plain-text files on your Mac (⇧⌘L)

14 choices: 12 looks plus Keep my prompt and Auto. Pick one from Shell › Prompt Style or with cyba prompt.

IdStyleWhat it looks like
builtinBuilt-in (Neon Basic)Clean two-line box prompt using the theme’s prompt character
aNeural LinkTwo-line HUD with exit status and run time on the right, plus an SSH tag
bGlitchKatakana tag, color-split user name, hex error code on failure
cCorp Terminal[SYS:ONLINE] [NODE:] [SEC:] [PATH:] >> megacorp console
dMinimal NeonUnderlined path and a neon rule, with a bolt on SSH
eNetrunner Deck[DECK:user]─[NODE:host]─[ICE:CLEAR], which shows ICE BREACH after an error, plus a trace of the last command
fRouter CLICisco/Juniper style host(dir)>, with # when root
gMainframe 3270All-caps JOB/NODE/USER/DSN, ABEND RC on error, READY
hSignal Bars▂▄▆█ bars for how fast your last command ran (or live Pulse latency), plus session uptime
iKanji RainOne line with a new katakana word on every command and glowing ⟩⟩
jHazard ModeStriped /!\ HAZARD warning band. Can switch on automatically for root or production hosts
kHolo CardBoxed HOST/USER/PATH/GIT card that collapses to one line after you press Enter
mineKeep my promptUses your own prompt (Powerlevel10k, Starship, …)
autoAutoYour own prompt if you have one, otherwise the theme’s default style

Every style takes its colors from the active theme and updates live when you switch themes. Each built-in theme has a default style; Arasaka, for example, uses Corp Terminal.

Widgets

25 widgets

25 widgets in three flavors. The drawer beside the terminal holds up to 5 at a time. Swap them from the widget library, the command palette or cyba widget.

Useful · 16

  • Pulse: new in 1.0: latency, loss and up/down status for up to 8 pinned hosts
  • Sys Stats: clock, live CPU and memory, network, host name
  • World Clocks: up to 6 labeled time zones
  • Now Playing: Apple Music or Spotify controls, ASCII cover art, and an equalizer that follows your audio
  • Neon Weather: 3-day Open-Meteo forecast with ASCII icons
  • Ping Grid: green/red tiles with round-trip time per host (0.5–60 s interval)
  • Port Watch: TCP ports listening on this Mac
  • Git Pulse: branch, changed files and recent commits for your current folder
  • Processes: top processes by CPU
  • Docker: running containers (if Docker is installed)
  • Clipboard: recent copies, kept in memory only
  • Cert Expiry: days until a domain’s TLS certificate expires
  • Network Map: the devices on your local network, from your Mac’s ARP table
  • Live SSH Stats: CPU, memory, load and disk of the server you’re SSH’d into
  • Log Tail: live tail -F of a remote log, with errors highlighted
  • Grok Bot: chat with Grok, using your own xAI API key stored in the Keychain

Eye candy · 5

  • Matrix Rain: falling code: katakana, binary, hex or your own characters
  • Hex Stream: scrolling memory hex dump
  • Radar Sweep: rotating sweep with contacts
  • Globe Trace: spinning ASCII Earth with trace arcs, or a real traceroute
  • Audio Visualizer: mic level bars, or a demo mode

Fun · 4

  • Busy Mode: a fake hacker feed in many styles: AI training, firewall, port scan and more
  • Glitch Face: an ASCII face that glitches in with about 120 ominous or funny lines
  • Trace Incoming: a fake “trace incoming” call alert
  • ASCII Cam: your camera as live ASCII art, off until you press Start Camera

Version 1.0.0 (build 19) Current

The first stable release.

New

  • Pulse widget: live latency and packet loss for up to 8 hosts, with sparklines, red DOWN rows and optional up/down alerts (toast or sound). It can also drive the Signal Bars prompt.

Privacy & security

  • Grok screen sharing is now opt-in. The Grok Bot widget only sends what’s on your terminal screen if you turn on Screen: ON. While it’s on you’ll see a red SCREEN SHARED badge, each shared message is marked, and a notice appears every time. It’s off by default, and existing installs are switched off once.
  • Keychain secrets stay on this Mac. Saved keys, like your xAI API key, are moved to “this device only” Keychain storage, so they don’t sync to other devices. Nothing is lost during the move.
  • Share My SSH Login with Widgets is now on by default. SSH widgets can reuse the connection you already logged into, so hosts that use a password or 2FA work. Your credentials are never logged.

Fixes

  • Fixed a crash that could happen during very heavy terminal output, for example when you cat a huge log (present since 0.7.8).
  • Theme editor: invalid themes now show an error instead of disappearing. Delete, in-place rename and duplicate all work. Re-imported themes no longer overwrite existing ones. Built-in themes are protected, and the prompt character is checked as you type.

Faster

  • Smoother rendering during big output floods: the display is capped at 30 fps while output pours in, but typing and scrolling stay full speed. CPU use is 16–37% lower on heavy output.
  • Matrix Rain, Radar Sweep and Busy Mode use less CPU.

Changed

  • CybaTerm’s focus is a fun, fast terminal. From 1.0 on, new features are widgets and themes.

CybaTerm has no telemetry, analytics, ads, crash-report upload or account, and it opens no listening ports on your Mac. Version 1.0.0 has no update check and no license check. Widgets connect to the internet only when you add and use them, and secrets like your xAI API key stay in the macOS Keychain on this Mac only. The Grok Bot widget only sees your terminal screen if you turn Screen: ON, and shows a red SCREEN SHARED badge while it does. Read the CybaTerm privacy policy →
